Before adjusting the idle speed on your Harley Sportster, the air filter must be clean, the the ignition timing and engine compression must also be within factory specifications.

IDLE SPEED ADJUSTMENT

1986-1987 models

1. Inspect the throttle cable free play if properly adjusted. If out of specification, adjust as needed.

2. If the Harley Sportster is not equipped with a tachometer, a shop tachometer will be needed to attach to the engine. Follow the manufacture's instructions supplied with the tachometer for installation.

3. Turn on the motor and allow the engine to reach normal operating temperatures. Accurate idle speed adjustment can not be obtained without the engine reaching normal operating temperatures.

4. Push the choke knob all the way in.

NOTE: 1st position (choke position plate fully open), second position, third position and 4th position (choke fully closed)

5. Locate the idle speed screw on the carburetor, turn the idle speed screw in or out and adjust the slow idle speed within factory specifications.

6. Close and open the throttle a few times, carefully observing for variations in the idle speed. Continue to adjust if necessary.

7. Pull out the choke knob to the second position. Turn the fast idle screw on the carburetor so the motor idles at 1700-1800 rpm. Next, push the choke knob in all the way to the closed position, the engine idle speed should drop to the slow idle speed.

8. Verify the fast and slow idle speeds are now within factory specifications.
