The following information is a parts description overview of the 1.8L (1.8T Turbo) 20
 valve cylinder head for 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005 Jetta, GTI and Golf Volkswagen 4-cylinder models with engine code AWD, AWW, AWP. 

Its recommended you use a factory repair manual when performing repairs on your VW Volkswagen, additional safety precautions, illustrations, diagrams, step-by-step procedures and other technical data maybe included. The information presented may differ depending on year, model and engine code.

INTERNAL CYLINDER HEAD PARTS OVERVIEW
  • Intake camshaft
    • With integral chain sprocket
    • Radial clearance wear limit: 0.1 mm (0.004 in.) with plastigage
    • Runout: maximum 0.01 mm (0.0004 in.)
  • Camshaft drive chain
    • Before removing, clean the sprocket and chain and place a mark on the direction of rotation
  • O-Ring
    • Always replace O-rings when servicing the cylinder head
  • Camshaft adjustment valve
  • Camshaft adjuster (AWW/AWP only)
    • The AWD 1.8L motor has a chain tensioner
    • Before installing, apply a sealant to the outer edges
  • Bolts
  • Screws
  • Gaskets
  • Cylinder head
  • Valves
    • Valves are sodium filled
    • Do not rework valves, only lapping is allowed
    • Quantity of valves: 3 exhaust valves and 2 intake valves per cylinder
  • Oil Seal

    • Always note the installation position
    • For camshaft position sensor
  • Washers
    • Conical shape
  • Camshaft sprocket bolt
    • Upon installation, torque to 65 Nm (48 ft-lb)
  • Camshaft sprocket
    • When the sprocket is in the installed position, the small web faces outward and the cylinder number one TDC mark is visible
  • Valve guide

  • Valve spring
  • Valve spring retainer
  • Valve keepers
  • Hydraulic valve lifter
    • Never interchange
    • If storing, place the cam contact surface facing down
    • Inspect the camshaft axial clearance before installation
    • oil all contact surfaces
  • Intake camshaft bearing cap
    • Make sure to note the installation position and sequence
  • Double bearing cap
    • Always apply sealant to the mating surface before installing the bearing cap/cylinder head
    • Apply sealant to the outer edges before installation
  • Exhaust camshaft bearing cap
    • Make sure to not the installation position and sequence
  • Exhaust camshaft
    • With internal chain sprocket
    • Radial clearance wear limit 0.01 mm (0.004 in.), checked with plastigage
    • Runout maximum 0.01 mm (0.0004 in.)
EXTERNAL CYLINDER HEAD PARTS OVERVIEW
  • Oil filler cap
    • Always replace any damaged gasket
  • Valve cover
    • The valve cover gasket is also know as the "cylinder head cover"

    • Never reuse the valve cover gasket
    • Always apply sealant to the corner areas at double bearing cap and chain tensioner before reinstalling
  • Oil deflector
    • The oil deflector is installed over the intake camshaft
  • Cylinder head
  • Intake manifold Gasket
    • Never reuse the intake manifold gasket
  • Cylinder head gasket
    • Never reuse the cylinder head gasket
    • The cylinder head gasket is made of metal
    • When installing the cylinder head gasket, the part number on the gasket should be visible from intake side
  • Fitted bolt
  • Exhaust manifold gasket
  • Cylinder head bolt
    • Never reuse the cylinder head bolts
    • Follow correct torque sequence upon installation
